I know readers have bothhope [sic] and fear when it comes to adaptation, so let me say: A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC will be done right, or not at all.

A Darker Shade of Magic is a movie[3][4][5] based on A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab. Sony Pictures[4] and Gerard Butler's production company G-BASE have acquired the rights to adapt the book.[6]

Production[]

On February 3, 2016, it was announced that Gerard Butler's production company G-BASE acquired the rights to adapt the Shades of Magic series as a limited TV series consisting of ten or twelve episodes.[6]

With help from producer Danielle Robinson,[6] V. E. Schwab had already written the pilot script.[7] However, a year later, on February 24, 2017, it was announced that a movie would be produced instead,[3] and that Sony Pictures won the movie rights, beating Fox 2000, eOne, and Lionsgate.[4] With the format change, Schwab has become one of the producers of the movie alongside Robinson, Alan Siegel, and Neal Moritz.[3] Toby Ascher from Original Productions[8] is the executive producer, and Executive Matthew Milam and Sanford Panitch, the president of Sony Pictures, are set to oversee production.[4]

In 2018, Schwab stated that a script for the movie was already written[9] and that is "magical."[10] However, that script was later replaced with one Schwab wrote herself.[11]

On September 23, 2019, Schwab had an extensive and quite successful meeting with the movie's screenwriter.[12]

On October 3, 2019, the movie's screenwriter was announced: Derek Kolstad, the creator of the John Wick franchise.[13]

Schwab and her movie team are currently in negotiations with a director.[14]

There is the possibility that A Gathering of Shadows and A Conjuring of Light may be adapted as movies as well.[3][4]

Trivia[]

  • When V. E. Schwab went to Los Angeles to meet with producer Danielle Robinson to discuss the project, Robinson gifted her an antique map of London.[15]
  • The scene Schwab is most excited to see in the movie is the one where Lila creates another Kell and makes it do a strip tease before it attempts to kill her.[16]
