Vares is the dead pet owl of Tes Ranek. She often talks to him.[1]

Physical description[]

Vares is an articulate owl skeleton, held together by silver wire. He has two stone eyes—one is black, the other blue. Although Vares is a skeleton, he can still move, albeit only limitedly, because of a spell Tes wove around him.[1][2]

Biography[]

History[]

When Tes Ranek was twelve, she purchased the dead owl from Elrick, along with a gift for her father's birthday. Tes re-created the spellwork of a slightly animate stuffed bird that stood in her father's shop, On Ir Ales, and applied it to Vares. while she worked on Vares, her older sister Serival entered her room. She snatched the bird when she noticed it could move, and accused Tes of having stolen it. Tes blurted out that she made it during their quarrel. Before Serival could inquire further, Forten called her away. She returned the owl and left.

Immediately, Tes grabbed the owl and informed her mother about what had transpired. Her mother gave her money and told her to leave. Tes sought out Elrick who brought her and Vares to Red London.[3]

Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • Tes named Vares after Kell Maresh because both have two-colored eyes.[1]
